Sandwich Sunday

How do you see your faith working in your daily life?  How do you “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God?”  (Micah 6:8)   As Christ served others, we are called to do the same.  10,000 homeless individuals are on the streets of Houston on any given night according to Cathedral Health and Outreach Ministries.  What can we do to help?  We can make small steps to show these individuals that they are important and deserve the essentials to life that we often take for granted.  Through our efforts we can make a difference in these people’s lives, show love through our actions, and play a role in the global effort to end hunger and homelessness.  To put it simply, we are creating lunches for folks without homes and with everyone’s help, we can provide for many.

What is needed:

Bagged lunches (water, a desert, a chip/cracker, fruit, and a sandwich) OR

  • Sandwich supplies such as bread, peanut butter, jelly, lunch meat, etc.
  • Chips, crackers, nuts, raisins, etc.
  • Sweet snacks such as cookies, granola bars, desserts
  • Fresh fruit (apples, oranges, bananas)
  • Bottled water (please no soda)
  • Bags – Ziploc baggies for the food supplies, Plastic bags to bundle each lunch, Big grocery bags to hold the lunch bags
  • Special Request Items - Fresh Veggies, Condiment packages (mayo, hot sauce etc. left over from fast food meals), toiletries such as travel shampoo, soap, toothpaste, mouthwash, hand sanitizer, deodorant, socks etc.

On the first Sunday of every month we will make the sack lunches and leave no later than 12:15 pm to take them to Star of Hope in downtown Houston.

**EXCEPTION – January 2012, falls on New Year’s Day, so we are changing January’s Sandwich Sunday to January 8th **

Everyone is invited to help with this project! We would love for the junior and senior high Crossroads class to put together the bags during the Sunday School hour to really bring home our ELCA World Hunger studies this year. Younger children are encouraged to participate as well, but we do ask that a parent or other adult be present to help facilitate :) It’s NEVER to early to help feed the homeless!

If you want to help make deliveries or have any ideas, suggestions, etc., please let us know. The easiest way to contact us through e-mail, via Facebook or stop in the front office!

There is a “how to” guide available for individuals/families that are able to deliver lunches to Star of Hope.

Thanks,

Sandwich Sunday Team
